Born and raised in eastern Iowa, Loren moved to Council Bluffs in 1986 when his father, Rev. Dr. Lowell T. Knauss, became Minister of Grace Presbyterian Church in Council Bluffs. Loren has been a resident of Council Bluffs ever since. He is married to wife Tina (Crescent native), and lives in Council Bluffs' west end.
Community Leadership
Loren was elected to the Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors in November 2002, and was reelected in 2006. He took office in January 2003, and assumed the role of liaison to the County Attorney’s office, the Board of Health, County Property, Economic Development, General Assistance, Personnel, Secondary Roads, the Sheriffs Office and Jail, the South West Iowa Juvenile Emergency Services Board, the Treasurer’s office and the Veteran Affairs office.

Education
Loren attended Abraham Lincoln High School and graduated in 1990. After graduating high school, Loren attended Iowa Western Community College and received an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in Criminal Justice. He attended Bellevue University and received a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice Administration in 2002.
Work Experience
Loren began his career in law enforcement as a reserve deputy with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office in 1991. He became a Corrections Officer with the Pottawattamie County Jail in 1992, and worked with the department until 1996 when he became a police officer with the Council Bluffs Police Department. As a police officer, he served as a patrol officer, a detective, and a crisis negotiator (commonly known as a hostage negotiator). Loren was elected to the Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors in November 2002.
Volunteer Experiences
- American Red Cross
Loren volunteered with the Red Cross while attending Iowa Western. He had the opportunity to assist in Howells, Nebraska after a flood struck their community in 1991. He returned to the Red Cross in the summer of 2000 and was sent to New York in October 2001 to assist at Ground Zero as a Red Cross security supervisor and a liaison with the New York Police Department. He assisted in New York for 3 1/2 weeks. In 2005 Loren went to Louisiana with Red Cross Disaster Services to assist in the recovery following Hurricane Katrina.
- S.O.L.A.S. (Support Our Local Animal Shelter)
Loren is a member of S.O.L.A.S., an organization that works with the Council Bluffs Animal Shelter to assist in the adoption and humane treatment of animals in the Council Bluffs area.
- Southwest Iowa Domestic Violence Council
He was a member of the Southwest Iowa Domestic Violence Council from July 1997, to January 2002. During this time he served on the board of directors and was president of the board from January 2001 to January 2002.
- Special Deputy - Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Department
Loren was a reserve deputy with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Department from 1991 to 1993.
